Growing media for cuttings and early roots
Propagation media support cuttings and provide the environment around their young roots. This category includes Cannsa Plugs, Eazy Plug and Eazy Block, Jiffy peat pellets, ROOT!T propagation cubes, stone-wool trays and Plagron seed and cutting compost. Formats range from individual cubes and filled trays to loose growing media. Your choice depends on the plant species, watering routine and the medium in which the plants will continue growing after propagation.
Compare material, format and preparation
Ready-shaped plugs make individual planting positions easy to organise, while propagation compost can fill containers of your choice. Expanding pellets need the prescribed amount of water before use. Stone wool and organic propagation media differ in preparation, water management and nutrient supply, so do not transfer one material’s instructions automatically to another.
For trays, compare external dimensions, the number of planting positions and individual cell sizes. When moving plants into a larger block, the plug must fit its receiving opening. Check any existing starter fertiliser and the manufacturer’s guidance before adding nutrients. Keep the medium appropriately moist for the species and allow the intended drainage. Also check whether the item is supplied dry or already prepared for use. These details help match the medium to the full propagation process.
