Perlite or vermiculite: choose an additive by its purpose
A substrate additive changes the properties of your existing mix. Perlite, made from expanded volcanic rock, is used to improve aeration and drainage. The vermiculite also listed here is a different mineral, especially valued for moisture retention. Start by deciding what you want to change.
Plan the mixing ratio and pack size together
Agra Perlite is listed in a 100-litre bag, with a stated proportion of 10–20 percent for soil or coco. Plagron Perlite is offered here in a 10-litre bag; its manufacturer specifies adding 10–35 percent to soil. These ranges relate to each product and do not replace an assessment of the starting medium.
For example, 10 litres of finished mix containing 20 percent perlite requires 2 litres of perlite and 8 litres of base medium. If a ready-made soil or coco blend already contains perlite, count that existing share too.
Vermiculite serves a different priority
The PLANT!T Vermiculite bag contains 10 litres. Consider it when greater moisture retention is wanted. It is not an equivalent replacement for perlite in every recipe and does not replace fertiliser. Assess the finished mix after watering: it must suit the container, drainage and plants' needs.
