Choose a pump for your tank and irrigation layout

Do you want to circulate water inside a reservoir or send it through a hose to pots at a higher level? These jobs place different demands on a pump. Choose by the delivery route, water volume needed and connection size. A large litre-per-hour figure alone does not show which pump fits your setup.

Consider flow rate and delivery head together

The listed 400 l/h circulation pump has a maximum head of 0.8 m. The 1400 l/h model lists up to 2 m, and the 3500 l/h RP submersible pump up to 5 m. Maximum flow rate and maximum head are separate limits; the highest flow is not available at the maximum height. Also allow for hose length, bends and connected distributors.

Match the hose and electrical connection

According to the descriptions, the 400 l/h pump has an 11 mm hose connection and the 1400 l/h model a 19 mm connection. The RP submersible pump lists a 25 mm hose connection and a 1-inch male thread. Check both sides of the connection before ordering a hose or adapter.

The RP submersible pump is supplied with an EU electrical connection according to its listing; allow for a suitable adapter for a Swiss socket. When replacing an existing pump, compare the plug type and included parts as well as the performance figures.

Select a timer to suit the pump

The GSE irrigation timer is a separate control unit. It provides separate settings for run time and pauses, and for day and night. Compare its permitted motor load with the chosen pump. A circulation pump and an air pump serve different purposes; water movement alone does not guarantee a particular oxygen level.
