Choose potting soil by nutrient content and plant stage
A propagation soil has a different role from a richer pre-fertilised mix for established plants. Consider the nutrients already present and how you intend to feed later. The listed Gold Label blends and Plagron seed and cutting soil therefore differ in more than their names.
Gold Label: Gold, Light or no perlite?
Special Mix Gold is a pre-fertilised peat substrate with perlite. The manufacturer describes an initial nutrient supply of around two to three weeks. Treat this as guidance rather than a fixed feeding date: plant size, uptake and growing conditions still matter.
Special Mix Light contains less fertiliser and allows you to manage feeding earlier. According to the manufacturer, Custom No Perlite omits perlite and includes added coco. Choose it for its specific composition; perlite-free does not mean peat-free.
A finer medium for seeds and cuttings
Plagron seed and cutting soil is listed as a fine, low-nutrient propagation mix in a 25-litre bag. It is intended for starting sensitive young plants. Moisten it according to the product instructions and adjust later feeding to plant development.
Estimate the amount needed from the number and usable volume of your containers. Check the stated litres for the selected bag rather than assuming another blend's pack size. A suitable pot with drainage and watering adjusted to actual moisture levels are part of the choice.
