Choose a growing medium to suit watering and feeding
The root medium helps determine how you supply water and nutrients. Compare more than bag size and price: consider its fertiliser content, preparation and physical form. This range includes soil mixes, coco, clay pebbles, stone wool, substrate additives and propagation media for different setups.
Soil or coco for pots?
A soil mix's nutrient reserve varies with its formulation. Gold Label Special Mix Gold has a higher initial fertiliser content than Special Mix Light; Custom No Perlite is a perlite-free option. Plagron seed and cutting soil offers a finer structure for propagation. Match additional feeding to the chosen product and the plants' development.
Coco is available as a compressed block, a growbag or a blend with perlite. For a block, compare the volume after expansion. The Plagron Premium Growbag contains washed, buffered coco without added fertiliser, so plan suitable feeding from the start.
Distinguish hydroponic media, propagation products and additives
Clay pebbles, stone wool blocks and slabs place different demands on containers and irrigation. When choosing blocks, match the starter cube to the planting hole. NFT root matting serves a different purpose from a stone wool substrate slab.
Perlite can improve aeration and drainage, while vermiculite is mainly used to increase moisture retention. Account for additives already present before blending your own mix. For propagation, firm plugs make transfer to the next medium easier. Match their quantity and dimensions to the propagator tray and allow for water drainage with every medium.
