Choose stone wool from propagation cubes to growing slabs
With stone wool, the stages should fit together: a small propagation cube can move into a suitable block, while larger blocks may form part of a slab setup. External dimensions, planting holes and irrigation are the key factors. Similar product names alone do not confirm compatibility.
Match hole diameter and block size
The listed Cultiwool starter blocks measure 7.5 × 7.5 × 6.5 cm. Their round planting holes differ: 25 or 40 mm in diameter, both 35 mm deep. Match the propagation cube to this opening and check the specifications of the selected tray.
The larger growing block measures 15 × 15 × 14.2 cm, with a hole 40 mm wide and 35 mm deep. It takes up considerably more space than the starter block. Account for the total setup height as well as its footprint.
Distinguish slabs from loose flakes
The 100 × 15 × 7.5 cm OptimaXX Growingslab is a stone wool slab for horizontal use. Check that it fits the intended trough and leaves drainage accessible. Mapito RFX-1 is instead a loose blend of stone wool and PU flakes for suitable containers.
Preparation, initial wetting and nutrient solution depend on the specific product. Do not apply the same soaking times or watering intervals indiscriminately to trays, blocks, slabs and flake media. Plan how to monitor moisture and drainage from the outset.
