Plan watering from the reservoir to the plant
Want to carry fewer watering cans, supply several pots or set up hydroponics? Start with a routine that suits you. With a watering wand, you decide how much water each plant receives. A fixed system distributes water through lines or uses a shared reservoir. Its supply, distribution and return arrangements need to work together.
Choose the water source and position first
A tank provides your own water reserve, but needs floor space and access for refilling. For a pump, flow rate is only part of the decision: it must also overcome the required height and resistance in the pipework. Compare the delivery needed under your conditions, rather than just the highest litre figure on the box.
Capillaries and drip distributors for existing rows of pots serve a different purpose from NFT, DWC or ebb-and-flow systems. A complete system can simplify selection, but check which pumps, pots, hoses and controls are actually included.
Small connections make a difference
Before buying, note hose and pipe diameters and whether threads are male or female. An inch size on a thread and a millimetre size on a hose describe different connections. Suitable filters help keep dirt out of sensitive distributors. Also plan shut-off points, cleaning access and an accessible drain. This makes later maintenance or expansion possible without replacing all the pipework.
